Brief: To design and renovate the new site of Galeria Madragoa in Lisbon.

Galleria Madragoa is famous for creating powerful installations in very small spaces and for working closely with its artists to create extraordinary interventions.

Commissioned to design its new location in Lisbon, Ab Rogers Design responded to the sites 4.8m ceiling heights and double aspect windows, creating a minimal space focused on liberating the 15m expanse of the principal wall for display, and celebrating the illumination of daylight pouring in from both north and south sides.

We concentrated all secondary needs – office administration and storage – into one radiused volume inserted into the centre of the gallery. The glow of its Barragan pink interior radiates outward across the space, representing the beating heart of the gallery where all the planning and programming goes on.
