Tate Modern
May 2006

To coincide with the first complete rehang of Tate Modern's Collection since opening in 2000, ARD was commissioned to redevelop the concourses on Level 3 and 5. Building a simple language from geometric forms and the colour red, we created a clear and strong identity for these areas.

A set of vivid, angular structures, and a hand-drawn art-historical timeline connecting both spaces. The red colour responds to the high tech palette of much modernist and contemporary art. It complements the dynamic, modern feel of the space.

The 40-metre long timeline illustrated by Sara Fanelli is flowing like a mind-map across the bulkheads. Creating a feeling of being neither fixed nor prescriptive, Fanelli's timeline conveys chronology, while at the same time evoking looser connections between artists and movements.
