July 2004: Energy – Fuelling the Future February 2006: 2005 MacRobert Award October 2009: ‘Prove It!’
On 23 July 2004 the Science Museum unveiled its latest gallery, created especially to help young people explore how energy powers every aspect of their lives and discover and question the latest ideas on how we'd meet the planet's growing demands in the years ahead. ARD created one of the very popular kinetic game for the gallery. The Energy gallery challenges visitors to assess their dependence on the energy supplies we use today and to consider different options for supplying our future energy needs. The 2005 MacRobert Award has been won by a Cambridge-based company known as Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) for the development of its BlueCore family of chips. ARD in collaboration with Dominic Robson, designed the exhibit centres on a large projected animation that allows visitors to explore the structure of the chip in great detail and learn more about Bluetooth technology. In December 2009, 192 countries met at a special summit in Copenhagen to tackle climate change. To signal this moment, the Science Museum commissioned ARD to design an exhibition exploring the scientific evidence behind climate change, signaling that it is not belief, but fact. A series of large cone-shaped tensile structures fill the space, constructed from lengths of string attached to powder-coated white steel rings. The strings are pulled taut against the museum’s walls and ceiling, tapping into its excess structural energy. As a counterpoint to the public building's wasted energy, the cones are temporary monuments made from an absolute minimum of physical materials, beacons that signal environmental consciousness to the world.
