The exhibition ‘Richard Rogers + Architects’ (designed by Ab Rogers Design), which was showing at The Caixa Forum in Madrid, closed last month. And Vicki, the Curator of Exhibitions at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, has announced that this exhibition had attracted its biggest audience yet to the RR+A exhibition in the CaixaForum Madrid with 232,799 visitors!! Hip-hip Hurray!

To recap, the show at the Pompidou Centre in 2007 - which also made a record of attracting the most visitors to an Architecture Exhibition EVER (in the history of Architecture exhibitions opened at the Pompidou Centre), attracted just under 150,000 visitors.

So to date, over half a million people have visited the RR+A exhibition in total from Paris, London, Barcelona and Madrid!

We think this is an incredible figure for an exhibition of this size.

22nd October 2009. With opening speeches from John Beddington (Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government), Ed Miliband (MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change) and David Miliband (MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs), the press opening of ‘Prove It!’ (Designed by Ab Rogers Design) proved to be great success, creating a huge buzz.

This December, 192 countries will meet in Copenhagen to tackle climate change. In preparation for this crucial summit, the Science Museum commissioned Ab Rogers Design to design Prove It!. This exhibition explores the scientific evidence behind climate change, signaling that it is not belief, but fact. At the same time, it inspires action and a sense of optimism for a greener future.

A series of large cone-shaped tensile structures fill the space, constructed from lengths of string attached to powder-coated white steel rings. The strings are pulled taut against the Science Museum’s physical structure, tapping into its excess energy. As a counterpoint to the wasted energy of the public building, the structures act as temporary monuments made from an absolute minimum of physical materials, beacons that signal environmental consciousness to the world.

The world-renowned Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI, Melbourne) celebrates the moving image in all its forms – film, television, games, new media and art. Ab Rogers Design won the international competition to re-design the major galleries and their associated permanent exhibitions and function spaces, with a total area of 2500square-metres. In addition, Ab Rogers Design undertook a master planning exercise of the centre as a whole, identifying the need to restructure circulation across the site and create a new external façade and a dedicated entrance to the galleries.

The design concept was to create a series of strong, flowing landscapes and forms to create cohesion and unity among the hundreds of objects and screens on display. Specified materials range from natural bamboo, recycled artificial turf and fiberglass through to traditional leathers. Together, they create a sophisticated and unexpected palette. In line with ACMI’s environmental policy, we have sourced sustainable, local, low energy and recycled products to minimise the environmental impact of production.

And … here are some photos from the opening event which took place today in Melbourne.

‘The Design Museum’s Super Contemporary exhibition focuses on London design.
If you could design one thing to benefit the capital what would it be?’

And this is what Ab thinks! :

“London needs a floating desert island to drift down the River Thames, stopping at random, unexpected locations.

An oasis for escape. A space without time or location, drifting freely and liberating people from the city.

A liberated, floating, desert island would be a great way discover the Thames which is a magical element of London.

The island, free of everything except desert, should be a magical place for contemplation and escape, taking you to and showing you places you have never seen.

We often take London for granted and need a mechanism for discovery.”
