Victoria & Albert Museum: Amplify [Hearwear]
July 2005
4 black felt monoliths, each with an integral immersive soundscape sit within a small room in the beginning of the 20th Century Galleries at the V&A. Each tent represents a different period in the future; inside the tents you can hear sounds that create the period and discussion that you are entering. The room is painted midnight blue, the only light comes from the back of the monoliths or from with the text boxes that are internally lit.
Inside and outside the monoliths are light boxes with self-illuminated texts informing the visitors what they are seeing and hearing, setting the context and telling the story of Amplify.
The sound-scapes create an emotional subversive environment with the surrounding darkness which helps the visitor become lost within their expanse and escape into the future. The visitor is encouraged to imagine a future, where these optimistic hearing objects may exist.
